As the Rotarian riders, supported by their on-road crew, knock back the kilometres over the last of the Australian summer heat, the focus will be on our charity - Australian Rotary Health. Along with our Rotary fellowship enjoyed along the way, the funds raised will make all our efforts worthwhile.
Australian Rotary Health (ARH) is one of the largest independent health research funds in Australia. Since its establishment in 1981, ARH has provided over $35 million in funding for health research in Australia.
Since 2000, ARH has directed the bulk of its funding towards research into the mental health area. Many D9790 Rotary Clubs - including Corowa Rotary Club - have conducted Mental Health Awareness evenings. Through these presentations, communities have been brought in touch with local health providers. The stigma of mental health has been addressed and families have been resourced to deal with any issues.
During 2014 - 2017, the RTC team supported Anne-Maree Nielson - an indigenous medical student at Flinders University, Darwin. We are now supporting our second Indigenous Scholar - Kate Postans. As well as the indigenous Health Scholarship program, the RTC team raises money for the funding of scholarships in Mental Health research.
Most recently, ARH has been forging a partnership with the RSL in view to raising funds for PTSD Research for ex-service personnel and their families. Fellow RTC cyclist - PDG Philip Clancy, our D9790 ARH co-ordinator - is providing leadership in this emerging area of need.
